Multiple languages in the same Squarespace site

Here's a video walkthrough of a project we just completed for Dream Big that makes their site multilingual.

Custom scripting allows switching between an English and Spanish version of the site.

When viewing the Spanish version of the site any interface content that is hard coded in English is automatically replaced with Spanish translations.

We've even translated things like forms, where labels and form validation messages are hard coded in English.

One thing that isn't shown in the video, because it's not yet published on Dream Big's website, is a blog where all of the hard coded elements, such as next/prev,  comment & like  are translated into Spanish. Dates are also translated to be compatible with the Spanish ordering.

Would you like your Squarespace Site to support multiple languages?

The solution for DreamBig shows how a Squarespace site can be made multilingual.

Unfortunately, the work it takes to get everything working smoothly goes beyond the scope of a free giveaway.

The DreamBig solution supports 2 languages for standard pages, blogs and forms.

There are many things the solution can't yet do that would require additional scripting:

  • Allow translation of summary blocks, event page and other block & page types that contain hard coded English texts.

  • Add support for every Squarespace template

  • Cover more than 2 languages

  • Translate e-commerce functionality (it's unlikely that the checkout could be translated at all)
